I Almost Fell for a Job Scam and It Looked Completely Real
✍️ By Angelic Muse
I want to share something that just happened because it honestly shook me a little.
I applied to a job. Nothing unusual. Just one of many applications I’ve been sending out lately. Remote role, assistant type position, something flexible.
I got a response.
At first, it felt exciting. The company was real. I checked their website. Everything looked legit. The email was professional, well written, and not overly pushy.
But something in me paused.
I couldn’t explain it at first. It just felt slightly off. Not wrong, just… off.
So I went back and looked closer.
The email address looked almost identical to the company’s real domain. Almost. But not exactly. And that is where it clicked.
This was not them.
That moment gave me chills a little because I realized how easy it would be to miss. If I had been more tired, more rushed, or just a little less careful, I probably would have continued the conversation without questioning it.
And that is exactly what they are counting on.
These are not obvious scams anymore. They don’t look messy or fake. They look clean, calm, and believable.
Especially right now, when so many people are looking for work, it makes sense that these are everywhere. LinkedIn. Indeed. Craigslist. Even “easy apply” roles.
If you are applying to jobs right now, please slow down just enough to check these things:
• Look at the email domain very carefully, not just a quick glance
• Go to the actual company website and compare
• Be cautious if the process moves too quickly
• Trust your gut if something feels even slightly off
I’m sharing this because I was one small step away from going further into it.
And I know I’m not the only one out here trying to figure out what’s next.
Just be careful. There are real opportunities out there, but there are also people who know exactly how to make something look real when it’s not.
Sometimes the smallest pause is what protects you the most.
I’m glad I listened to mine.
